Ghana wins U-20 World Cup final


The FIFA U-20 World Cup wrapped up on Friday, October 16, 2009 with the championship and 3rd place matches. In the 3rd place match, Hungary faced Costa Rica while Ghana v Brazil was the final. Both matches would end up going into penaly kicks.


Ten-man Ghana won the FIFA U-20 World Cup Egypt 2009 by defeating Brazil in a sudden death penalty shoot-out after the two teams failed to break the deadlock in 120 minutes of football.


Ghana edges Brazil 0-0 (4-3 on penalties)
The match was dominated by Brazil for most of it but they failed to find the back of the net. A red card for Ghana player Daniel Addo in the 37th minute forced the African team to play very defensively. Brazil had the majority of possession and chances but Ghana’s defense remained solid and kept it scoreless. It went to penalty kicks after 120 minutes of no goals.

The penalty shoot out started off strong as both teams converted their first two chances. Ghana would miss their next two penalties while Brazil converted 1 of 2. Brazil’s Maicon had a chance to win the match if he could convert the fifth penalty but missed it high. Ghana took advantage and converted their 5th round to make it 3-3heading into the sixth round. Brazil missed their sixth penalty and Ghana would convert theirs to win the FIFA U-20 World Cup 4-3 on penalties.
